METALLICA's HAMMETT: Playing LIVE EARTH 'Might Be Most Important Moment Of Our Career'
July 31, 2007The Associated Press reports that Kirk Hammett is one guitar legend who cares about the planet.
"I just said to my wife earlier today this might be the most important moment of our entire career," Hammett told an incredulous interviewer after his band METALLICA performed at the London instalment of the eight-city Live Earth concert earlier this month. "You know, if we can make that much of a difference, and make that much change, by all means. Because I love the Earth, I love the environment, I love nature. And it's so important."
Hammett's METALLICA bandmate James Hetfield was less enthused about taking part in the Live Earth event. "I really avoided the press around the Live Earth day," Hetfield told Norway's NRK three days after the Live Earth concert. "I didn't quite agree with what was going on there. Politics drive me crazy, and I don't like talking politics. Politics get in the way of things; they get in the way of getting things done, and getting our music across is what we wanna do — we don't wanna cloud it with 'Democrat, Republican,' whatever. Our philosophy is 'think for yourself' at the end of the day — do what you think feels right. I really believe that humans will survive. I have a lot of faith in mankind that we will overcome and adapt — whatever it is; whether it's man-made or God-made, or Earth/Mother Nature — we have a lot of smart people on this planet that will make something good out of bad."
Can celebrities save the planet? Some of the performers at Live Earth seemed to think they could by converting their tour buses to biodiesel and exhorting their fans to use energy-saving light bulbs such as those made by concert sponsor Royal Phillips Electronics.
"It's amazing! Their slogan is 'It's so simple,' and just one person can use these light bulbs and change the world," marvelled Ashley Roberts, a member of the pop group PUSSYCAT DOLLS.
